At the site of what was once the largest iron works in the world, supplying almost half of the world's iron, a large-scale remediation scheme has been undertaken.
As part of this reclamation scheme, Spectrum Geo Services were employed to locate underground features and voids, which had been part of the original Iron Works, and which had not previously been removed. This operation was undertaken in conjunction with a major archaeological investigation, where all features were recorded for future academic use.
Coal washing pits, machine bases, rail lines and very early Bee Hive ovens were located and reported on, to allow a suitable foundation selection to be determined for the development.
Strata were assessed for risk slag expansion, and risk assessments undertaken as to the potential for damage to infrastructure.
